Life Saving Surgical Intervention for a Cloacal Prolapse in a Juvenile Turtle

Posted by Pets Haven | Jul 7, 2025
Turtles have a unique physical anatomy compared to other animals.

Males and females have a single urogenital and digestive opening called the cloaca. This area, which includes part of the rectum, the urethra, and part of the reproductive system, whether the penis or the female vagina, often undergoes a complete inversion.

This condition is called cloacal prolapse.

This poor turtle, weighing less than 56 grams, came to us with this problem, which is usually fatal if not treated within 24 hours.

However, she arrived about four days late.

The only solution was a quick surgical intervention to return these (outlawed) organs to their natural position. Then, under general anesthesia, she performed precise, deep internal and external sutures with five surgical sutures using 6/0 thread.

Thus, things returned to their natural place (and position). And God is the Grantor of success...
